Sightseeing in Rome

*Warning* - Picture heavy post...

Not wanting to waste any precious time we had in Rome I wanted to see every sight this city had to offer.

Along with St Peter's Basilica, I was most excited to see the Trevi Fountain, but to our unfortunate timing they were doing some structural work on it, I did try to avoid the ghastly steel pipes and plastic fences but they just kept creeping in...

Despite there being scaffolding all over this beautiful fountain it was still incredible to see. 86 ft tall and 161 ft wide I was quite taken aback by the sheer size of this. So many people had called it disappointing but I honestly can't see how. Even if it's not as big as what you think the detail that's on this and around most of Rome is utterly breathtaking. Work began on building the Trevi fountain in 1732 and wasn't actually finished until some 30 years later in 1762. I was so keen to throw in a coin but with signs everywhere saying not too I decided against it. If you go your meant to throw three coins over the left shoulder with the right hand.. don't forget to make a wish...

After a few minutes of trying to get 'scaffolding free' pictures we decided to find the Spanish steps... failing to find them, we came across Vittoriano. A huge mountain of white marble overlooking a piazza near the Colosseum.

I feel a Charlie & the chocolate factory moment here... "Come with me.. and you'll be, in a world of pure imagination" ... walking through 20 ft solid wooden doors to the wonders that are inside...

Everything just takes your breathe away...

And once you go up to the top.. this is the view you'll be getting.. Rome's best 360 degree view.. with some culture and incredible ceilings too.

The whole museum is filled with statues, paintings and a lot of steps to climb... and it's completely free to enter.... I'll be heading to the Colosseum tomorrow too.
